(AP) ? China's first female astronaut and two other crew members emerged smiling from a capsule that returned safely to Earth on Friday from a 13-day mission to an orbiting module that is a prototype for a future space station.

The Shenzhou 9 parachuted to a landing on the grasslands of the country's sprawling Inner Mongolia region at about 10 a.m. (0200 GMT). China declared the first manned mission to the Tiangong 1 module ? the space program's longest and most challenging yet ? a major stride ahead for the country's ambitious space program.

About an hour later, mission commander and veteran astronaut Jing Haipeng, 45, emerged from the capsule, followed by crew mates Liu Wang, 43, and 33-year-old Liu Yang, China's first female astronaut.

The three, all experienced air force pilots, were lifted on to folding chairs and appeared in good health. They smiled, waved, chatted and saluted as state television ran live footage from the landing site.

"Tiangong 1, our home in space, was comfortable and pleasant. We're very proud of our nation," Liu Yang told national broadcaster CCTV.

Space program commander, Gen. Chang Wanchuan, declared the astronauts in good health and declared the mission "completely successful."

He was followed by Premier Wen Jiabao, who said the mission marked "absolutely important progress" for the space program.

The mission had included both remote control and piloted dockings with the module and extensive medical monitoring of the astronauts as part of preparations for manning a permanent space station.

China's next goals include another manned mission to the module originally scheduled for later this year but which may be delayed depending on an evaluation of the Shenzhou 9 mission and the condition of the Tiangong 1. China has been extremely cautious and methodical in its manned missions, with more than three years passing since the previous one, and all four have been relatively problem-free.

Chen Shanguang, director for the Chinese Astronaut Research and Training Center, told a news conference that preparations and selection of astronauts were already under way for the Shenzhou 10 mission.

Tiangong 1 is due to be retired in a few years and replaced with a permanent space station around 2020 that will weigh about 60 tons, slightly smaller than NASA's Skylab of the 1970s and about one-sixth the size of the 16-nation International Space Station that China was barred from participating in, largely on objections from the United States. Possible future missions could include sending a rover to the moon, possibly followed by a manned lunar mission.

Launched June 16 from the Jiuquan center on the edge of the Gobi desert in northern China, Shenzhou 9 is the latest success for China's manned space program that launched its first astronaut, Yang Liwei, into space in 2003, making China just the third nation after Russia and the U.S. to achieve that feat. China would also be the third country after the United States and Russia to send independently maintained space stations into orbit.

Earlier in the week, a spokeswoman said China spent 20 billion yuan ($3.1 billion) on its space program between 1992 and 2005 ? a rare admission for a program with close links to the secretive military. By the time the next Shenzhou mission is completed, Beijing will have spent an additional 19 billion yuan ($3 billion), the spokeswoman said.

Wang Zhaoyao, director of China's manned space program office, said the program mirrors the rising global status of China.

"For any country, for any people, a space program is indispensable," Wang said.

Match Making For Boomers: Christian Dating in an Online World

Dating can make you feel both excited and sick all at the same time. For someone looking for a relationship, not just a hook up, dating holds not only the hope for a bright and loving future but also the possibility of pain and heartbreak. Dating is rough. People aren't always what they seem. When you start the dating process, you are usually on your best behavior. But many people try to be someone they aren't in order to convince the person they are dating that they have found exactly who they were looking for. But that doesn't result in a happy ending. Sure, you want to be on your best behavior...put your best foot forward. But you still want to be yourself. The goal is not to dupe someone into being in a relationship with you. The goal is to find someone who loves you for who you are and accepts you...faults and all.

Many single Christians find dating difficult. It is assumed that the church is the best place to find that special someone but that isn't always the case. Many churches have grown so large that many people end up feeling invisible, just a random face in the crowd.

Unfortunately, unless they take part in small group activities, getting to know others can be hard. There doesn't seem to be as much socializing after church as there used to be. Back in the day, the church sermon was just the beginning of your Sunday morning. After church there would be a potluck and the congregation would gather to get to know each other better and make lasting friendships. Nowadays, many churches have abandoned that tradition and therefore people can attend the same church for years and never really know anyone.

The world we live in is chaotic and moves at a hectic pace. It seems more and more individuals follow the "get in and get out" philosophy when it comes to going to Church. We all want to be fed, but we also have busy lives and things to do so we don't stick around afterward. So what is one to do when they want to fellowship with other believers and meet someone special who just may end up being their soul mate? The obvious choice is to make an effort in getting involved with your Church or small group. Most churches have a singles group that gets together at least once, maybe twice, a week. You can also look into outreach. Focus on helping others and you may just find what you are looking for when you stop looking. But if you are really wanting to jump into dating feet first, try online dating.

There are many online dating websites available on the Internet today. Some are geared toward the general public and others are created specifically for Christians.

Even though some single Christians may feel self-conscious about stepping into the world of Online Dating, there is no reason. Christian Dating is alive and well on the Internet and using the web to start meeting new Christian singles in your area is a fantastic way to socialize with people who take their faith as seriously as you do. Where else can you go to meet other Christians? If Church isn't filling that specific desire and obviously, going to bars and clubs to meet other Christian singles is not ideal, going to the Internet is the apparent choice.

My suggestion is to find a dating website that focuses on Christian Dating so that you know that the matches you get are Christian Singles. It is disappointing to see you have a match only to find out they have no interest in the Lord. The bible does state not to be yoked together with unbelievers so it is important to restrict your dating pool to other Christians. Obviously, befriending non-Christians is a good thing because you then have the opportunity to be a witness for Christ. But when it comes to giving your heart to someone else, you need to give it to someone who shares your belief and your faith. Hence, it is advisable to utilize a Christian Dating Website when beginning your online dating journey.

Once you find the right Christina dating site and being to create your profile, be honest. Be yourself. Take to heart the fact that you are special and unique and deserving to find happiness. Do you have your faults? Absolutely. We all do. We all have things about ourselves that we wish we could change and if there is something that you want to change about yourself..something that you want to work on...go for it. But don't hide who you are by trying to stuff yourself into someone else's ideal. Putting yourself out there is scary. Rejection is difficult to take but you can't look at rejection as you being rejected. You need to change your perspective. If someone does not or can not relate to you or make a connection with you...they aren't someone that you want to waste your time with. You move on and consider that you are one more person closer to finding that one individual who you can build a life with.

Are you guaranteed love? None of us are. But we all deserve a chance at having a fulfilling, loving relationship and there is nothing wrong in trying to jump-start the search by taking the step toward online Christian dating.

But I offer a word of caution. Don't put too much pressure on yourself and your date as you embark on the dating journey. A date is just a date. Don't go into a date with expectations that this person is going to be "The One". Just enjoy the night out. Enjoy the date at face value. Taking a more laid back attitude toward dating can help ease a lot of the unnecessary tension and stress that can come from dating. Dating can be fun. Enjoy the new experiences. Enjoy the company, the movie or the dinner. At the end of the day, if there is a connection there will be another date. If there isn't....then at least you got a good meal and you move on. A little self-confidence and perspective can go a long way toward success in dating.

Jonathan's passion is bringing people together from all walks of life. He believes that everyone deserves to find love and happiness.

Writing Desks - 12 Designs of Diverse Architectural Languages - Part 2

'; div.innerHTML = summary; } //]]> Writing Desks - 12 Designs of Diverse Architectural Languages - Part 2 Writing Desks - 12 Designs of Diverse Architectural Languages - Part 2

Contemporary and authentic, antique writing desks could serve a multifunctional purpose as side tables, dining tables, coffee tables, foyer tables or bathroom vanities. Let's examine the style and function of these 12 works of art: Wooten, Cylinder, Armoire, Slant Top, Bureau a gradin, Pedestal Desk, Bureau Plat, Bureau Mazarin, Ergonomic Desk, Carrel Desk, Carlton and Cheveret desk.

1. Wooton desk: Wooton desks were probably not the costliest desks in series production, but they were possibly the ones with the most drawers, nooks and crannies imaginable. A Wooten Desk is a variation of the Fall Front Desks.

2. Cylinder desk: This desk has small stacked shelves in front of the user's main work surface, and a revolving cylinder part that comes down to hide and locked work.

3. Armoire Desk: Often referred as a computer desk, it has a writing table built within a large cabinet closed by doors to hide any clutter and give the room a tidy appearance.

4. Slant top desk: This type of desk is practically a secretary desk, without the massive bookcase on top of it.

5. Bureau a gradin: An antique desk resembling a writing table with one or several tiers of small drawers and pigeonholes built on part of the desktop surface. It is usually placed in front of the user.

6. Pedestal desk: A large free-standing desk made of a rectangular working surface nestled on two pedestals or small stacked drawers of one or two sizes, with support around the bases.

7. Bureau plat: A series of drawers directly under the surface of the table (desk), to contain writing implements.

8. Bureau Mazarin: Many of these desks are kneehole desks that are meant to be used sideways, with one knee only beneath the work surface.

9. Ergonomic desk: related to the computer desk, it is designed to comfortably and aesthetically provide a working surface and conceal office and computer equipment and their peripherals.

10. Carre l desk: A predecessor to the cubicle desk that is small and features high sides meant to visually isolate its user from any surroundings either partially or totally.

11. Carlton House Desk: This desk is similar to a normal writing table. The small drawers above the surface form a U shape around the user instead of being set up in front.

12. Cheveret (or Sheveret) desk is very small and features a single drawer under the writing surface. In some cases small drawers and pigeonholes are built on top. It is also written with an "S": Sheveret. Some variations of the Cheveret are much taller and meant to be used standing up.

Here are a few resource books to delve into the origins of antique writing desks:

1. Portable Writing Desks (Paperback) by David Harris

2. Desks, Tables and Chairs by The Woodsmith Collection

You can also find a wide variety of antique desks and affordable reproductions online from sites like eBay and Leonard's Direct.

Classical desk forms we are presently familiar with evolved from the 17th and 18th centuries. Desks of this period were typically massive structures. Not all desks have the form of a table. The generic concept of a desk is the pedestal desk, which is also referred to as an executive desk. Desks were designed with slots, nooks, crannies, pigeonholes and hooks for the convenience of storing writing implements. These built in storage units were always an attractive feature to the functionality of a writing desk.

(AP) ? Fighter jets thunder above the English countryside. Missiles stand ready. And Big Brother is watching like never before.

The London Olympics are no ordinary games. Not since World War II have Britain and the United States teamed up for such a massive security operation on British soil.

Hundreds of American intelligence, security and law enforcement officials are flying across the Atlantic for the games that begin July 27. Some will even be embedded with their British counterparts, sharing critical intelligence and troubleshooting potential risks. Dozens of Interpol officers will also be deployed.

The unique collaboration is rooted in common threats the partners have faced since the Sept. 11 terror attacks on the U.S. and Britain's own deadly suicide bombings in 2005.

Britain was America's closest ally in Afghanistan and Iraq, making it a prime target of Islamic terror groups. And dozens of recent terror plots, including the 2006 plot to blow up nearly a dozen trans-Atlantic airliners, have been hatched within Britain's sizeable Muslim population, more than 1 million of whom have ties to Pakistan.

Although other Olympics have taken place since 9/11 ? Salt Lake City, Athens, Turin, Beijing and Vancouver ? London poses a different breed of security challenge.

"I'm confident that there is more than adequate security here for these games," Louis Susman, the U.S. Ambassador to the U.K., told The Associated Press. "That said, we live in a tumultuous world, whether that be in New York or London."

Intelligence officials say there has been an expected increase in chatter among extremist groups but there are still no specific or credible threats to the London games. The terror level is labeled substantial, a notch below severe and what it has been for much of the past decade. A substantial threat level indicates that an attack is a strong possibility.

"There is a perception in some quarters that the terrorist threat to this country has evaporated," said Jonathan Evans, head of Britain's domestic spy agency of MI5. "Bin Laden is dead, al-Qaida's senior leadership in Pakistan is under serious pressure and there hasn't been a major terror attack here for seven years. (But) in back rooms and in cars and on the streets of this country, there is no shortage of individuals talking about wanting to mount terrorist attacks here."

The potential threats to the London games are broad and diverse ? a lone wolf attacker such as Norway's Anders Behring Breivik who confessed to killing 77 people; a possible non-Asian Muslim convert who could slip by security with a European passport; a coordinated strike like the Sept. 11 terror attacks or a debilitating cyber-attack.

Although al-Qaida has been weakened by targeted U.S. strikes, its affiliates in places like Somalia and Yemen have stepped up their activity and increased their capabilities. They've even been working on bombs that can go undetected in airport scans.

British security officials fear that dozens of nationals who went to train in Somalia and elsewhere could eventually return.

"Terrorist problems have a long tail," said Evans. "They very rarely just stop."

Up to 1 million visitors are expected for the games, putting added strain on border security agents at airports like London's Heathrow, which has been criticized for its long lines and lack of staff to screen those arriving from other countries.

On site, some 300,000 people are expected to flow into Olympic Park in east London each day during peak times.

One of the key functions for Interpol, the international police organization, will be to speed intelligence data sharing between countries so threats can be deterred. U.K. officials scan Interpol data 130 million times per year, Interpol Secretary General Ronald K. Noble told the AP during an exclusive interview at the agency's Lyon headquarters.

"The truth is, and we know this from Norway, that you can't identify one ethnic group and say that's the ethnic group that should only concern us," Noble said. "But this Olympics ? from all that I know and based on all the information that Interpol has ? should be a safe Olympics."

Shared intelligence, better technology and boosted resources have allowed security officials to crack organized plots before they happen but the possibility of a self-starter extremist who operates below the radar remains one of the biggest fears.

In the case of Breivik, there were few warning signals that the self-styled anti-Muslim fanatic was about to kill 77 people last summer. The same essentially was true for Mohamed Merah, a Frenchman of Algerian descent who in March killed three paratroopers, a rabbi and three Jewish school children in southwest France.

Security officials say unless people are already known to authorities, they can go virtually undetected as they plan atrocities.

The overall security numbers are staggering. The games will be protected by some 12,000 police officers during peak times and 23,700 security staff ? a number that includes some 13,500 troops on standby, which is more than the 9,500 British troops currently in Afghanistan. A no-fly zone will also be established over Olympic venues from July 14 to August 15.

More than 100,000 people have applied for jobs at Olympics venues, being vetted for employment history and possible criminal backgrounds. The more rigorous checks are done by the government for accreditation to get into the games, according to Ian Horseman Sewell with G4S, a global company providing most of the training and security staff for the Olympics.

Still, Sewell admits London is different than past games.

"London is a proven terrorist target and it is the first time the summer Olympics have been operated in a post 7/7 environment in a place that isn't a totalitarian state," Sewell said, referring to the 2005 suicide bombings in London and the 2008 Beijing games. "From a security perspective, London is breaking new ground."

G4S will also help secure venues outside of the park and protect athletes.

Some specific teams from places like Belarus, Belgium, New Zealand and Vietnam will be training in northern France to keep costs down ? a move that prompted a joint Franco-British security exercise earlier this year.

Protecting athletes has been a concern since a terror attack at the 1972 Olympics in Munich killed 11 Israeli athletes and coaches.

"Israeli athletes will be staying away from the others in a more secluded area and with more security," a senior Israeli intelligence official told the AP, speaking on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of his job. "But a repetition of what happened in Munich is considered unlikely because Israel is ready and also because it isn't the kind of attack Palestinians would want now."

Technology has also advanced from past games.

Special Israeli surveillance technology has been rolled out for the Olympics across Britain, a country already known for its 4 million closed-circuit television cameras. Even more cameras have been installed at the Olympic Park.

Advanced facial and image recognition software will be used to identify suspects and connect multiple crime scenes. Cameras will be used to capture suspicious behavior. And special drones will be used for crowd surveillance, according to a salesman at an Israeli company who spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak to the press.

And remember the movie "Speed" where a bomb would allegedly go off if a bus went slower than 50 mph (80 kph)? Hundreds of public transport vehicles and VIP buses being used in the London games have already been equipped so authorities can tell if a driver is acting erratically ? something that might happen in a hijacking.

Authorities will also be able to stop a vehicle remotely or keep it going at a certain speed ? technology that could be useful if a terrorist were carrying explosives and threatening to crash a bus full of athletes into a crowded venue.

The British military has already made headlines with the weapons it will have available ? surface-to-air missiles, RAF Typhoon combat aircraft and an aircraft carrier docked on the Thames, the river that cuts across London close to several Olympic sites.

Security officials had worried that Irish dissidents could target the games, but those fears have dissipated.

Despite the U.S.-U.K. collaboration, there will still be differences in how the London Olympics is policed. Most of the security personnel will be unarmed ? a striking difference to operations in the United States.

Adding to security issues, leaders from around the world will want to visit during the Olympics. The American delegation will be led by first lady Michelle Obama while President Barack Obama focuses on his re-election campaign.

"I've not heard any American who has said they were concerned about security here," said Susman, the ambassador. "London has made an effort to showcase London for the world and I think it's going to be terrific."

Los Angeles Liposuction Patients Combining Dietary Changes with

Los Angeles, California (PRWEB) April 3, 2009

While body contouring cosmetic surgery may be viewed by some as an end-all to weight loss struggles, Los Angeles liposuction patients know better. Dr. Grant Stevens and Dr. David Stoker of Marina Plastic Surgery Associates (http://www.liposuction-southern-california.com) say that patients who prioritize a healthy lifestyle by maintaining healthy dietary and exercise patterns both before and after surgery often enjoy dramatically better results in the long term.

?I have been telling my patients for years: liposuction is not a quick fix for weight loss,? says Dr. David Stoker of Marina Plastic Surgery. ?Yes, many liposuction patients choose this procedure because they want to look more fit and toned ? but the best liposuction results are achieved when a patient watches what they eat and gets regular exercise. I?ve found that when it comes to body contouring, you really have to be healthy to look your healthiest.?

Los Angeles liposuction procedures are intended to reshape and contour the body in the areas that diet and exercise often can?t help, such as the hips and thighs in women and the belly in men. Modern techniques such as laser liposuction offer highly precise results without the risks, downtime, and discomfort of older methods, but Dr. Stevens and Dr. Stoker say that advanced techniques by no means undermine the importance of healthy living to promote better results.

?The liposuction procedure itself is only part of the process of helping patients successfully achieve the shape they want,? explains Dr. Stoker. ?Healthy eating promotes skin elasticity, which is important to help skin tighten after surgery, and exercise is a key factor in preventing post-surgery weight gain. Lifestyle directly impacts results, so I take the time to discuss these factors with each patient and, if necessary, address what kind of changes they need to make, months before their surgery.?

Typically, Dr. Stoker finds that his Los Angeles liposuction patients are very willing to make the necessary changes to ensure smoother results in the long term. Studies following weight levels in liposuction patients have found that patients who neglect to eat healthy in the months after their procedure are three times more likely to gain weight, while those who do not take the time to exercise regularly are four times as likely to add pounds.

?Patients who are still in the process of losing weight may need to delay surgery until they are within a healthy weight range, so that they can achieve the most flattering results possible,? Dr. Stoker says. ?This is why the initial consultation is so important. Patients who need help improving their health habits can be pointed toward healthy diet and exercise resources to get a head start before they undergo liposuction at my Los Angeles offices.?

When women and men visit Marina Plastic Surgery?s specialty Web site on liposuction, many are encouraged by the photos of liposuction patients in Los Angeles. Results range from subtle reshaping using Smartlipo to more extensive body contouring in multiple areas. In many cases, the patients who are healthiest before the procedure have the most satisfying results.

?I always tell my patients that I?m doing the easy part for them,? says Dr. Stoker. ?Surgery requires years of training and a strong sense of balance and beauty, but it?s only one part of the process. Diet and exercise can be just as vital in maintaining a newly contoured shape.?

Dr. David Stoker (http://www.liposuction-southern-california.com) is a board-certified plastic surgeon practicing in Los Angeles. He performs hundreds of liposuction procedures each year in addition to many other plastic surgery procedures. In 2005 he was chosen by The New York Times as one of the top cosmetic plastic surgeons in the nation with special mention of his experience in liposuction, tummy tucks and breast surgery. Dr. Stoker graduated with honors from Stanford University and studied medicine at the University of California at San Francisco before completing residencies in General and Plastic Surgery through New York University School of Medicine?s prestigious Institute of Reconstructive Plastic Surgery.

ATHENS, Greece (AP) ? Can there be one day without bad news for the new Greek government?

Perhaps, but not Tuesday. The coalition government suffered another setback as a second Cabinet member quit in two days over what critics called a conflict of interest. The departure of Giorgos Venicos was hardly earthshattering ? he was the deputy at the merchant marine ministry ? but it was the latest in a litany of missteps and bad luck that have halted the government's ability to regain control of Greece's austerity program.

Prime Minister Antonis Samaras' new conservative-led government was sworn in last week, ending months of political deadlock. But in the last week alone it has suffered a string of casualties.

? The designated finance minister resigned Monday due to illness after being hospitalized the day he was to have been sworn in.

? Samaras himself is recovering at home from a serious eye operation and will be unable to attend a European Union leaders' summit later this week.

? The two health problems delayed a visit to Athens by international debt inspectors, which in turn delayed their report on Greek debt for EU leaders.

? The latest casualty, Vernicos, did not immediately give a reason for his departure Tuesday. But the main opposition Syriza party had accused him of maintaining an offshore company in what appeared to be a conflict of interest.

? On the positive side, prominent economist Yannis Stournaras was named as Greece's new finance minister Tuesday. Stournaras, 55, was involved in the country's negotiations to join the euro and was head of the Foundation for Economic and Industrial Research, a think tank and research body.

Shares on the Athens Stock Exchange rose on the news of his appointment, closing up 1.59 percent at 575.83.

Greece has been surviving on ?240 billion ($300 billion) in rescue loans from other EU countries and the International Monetary Fund since May 2010. Samaras' government has promised to push for a break from the harsh austerity measures demanded by creditors as Greece struggles through a fifth year of recession.

Samaras' office said he spoke on the telephone Tuesday with German Chancellor Angela Merkel and eurogroup head Jean-Claude Juncker, after talking on the phone with President Barack Obama.

Ben May, economist at Capital Economics, estimates Greece should have enough money to get it through the end of July. He expects some form of negotiations to take place this week on Greece's bailout terms, even if the prime minister can't be in Brussels in person.

May said the delay of the debt inspectors' visit to Athens "could be a problem" and will make debt negotiations all the more urgent.

"Time will be tight. They won't want to take negotiations to the wire," he said of Greek politicians.

Stournaras, the new finance minister, has publicly criticized Greece's avoidance of carrying out broader structural reforms to cut costs, arguing that successive tax hikes to try and improve public finances will ultimately fail.

"I do think we have the ability to get past this problem. But we must be realistic," Stournaras said about Greece's financial crisis. "We have a difficult road ahead of us, an uphill road ... but Greece is a country with great potential."

The salary cuts and tax increases that Greece has imposed have sent unemployment spiraling to above 22 percent.

Backed by conservatives, socialists and a small left-wing party, the new government has said it wants to lower some taxes, freeze public sector layoffs and extend by two years the mid-2014 deadline for the austerity measures.

European countries appear cool to the idea, however. Germany, the largest single contributor to the rescue loans, has insisted repeatedly that Athens stick to its commitments.

Many financial experts, however, think the current terms of Greece's bailout are not sustainable, and something needs to be done if Greece is going to be able to stay in the 17-nation eurozone.

Socialist leader Evangelos Venizelos said Greece remains committed to the EU and to the joint euro currency.

"The message is that we respect our institutional relationship with our partners," he said. "Greece will not take unilateral actions ... but is asking for an organized review of the (bailout) agreement."

Cyprus seeks EU bailout for banks, budget

NICOSIA (Reuters) - Cyprus said on Monday it was applying to Brussels for a bailout, both for its banking sector hit by exposure to Greece and for its budget deficit, making it the fifth euro zone country to turn to the bloc's rescue funds for help.

Tiny Cyprus has just four days left to raise at least 1.8 billion euros - equivalent to about 10 percent of its domestic output - to meet a deadline set by European regulators to recapitalize Cyprus Popular Bank, its second largest lender which saw its balance sheet hurt by bad Greek debt.

Finance Minister Vassos Shiarly said the country would also seek enough money to help with its budget deficit. The full amount would be decided over the course of weeks.

"The amount will be as much as it may be needed to cover the recapitalization and fiscal requirements," he told Reuters. "These will be established after careful review during the next few weeks."

The announcement means Cyprus would follow Greece, Ireland, Portugal and Spain into the arms of the emergency rescue funds set up for the 17-member euro currency zone.

Jean-Claude Juncker, head of the Eurogroup of euro zone leaders, said Cyprus would have to negotiate aid conditions with the EU and European Central Bank.

"This will include measures that will address the main challenges of the Cyprus economy, primarily those of the financial sector, and I expect that Cyprus will engage with strong determination in the required policy actions," he said.

With its coffers emptying rapidly and hurtling towards an immovable deadline, the island suffered a further sovereign credit rating cut on Monday by Fitch, to the non-investment, or junk, BB+ grade. Cyprus has already been shut out from raising new funds on capital markets, with yields on its existing bonds well into double digits.

Cypriot officials said the bailout request did not specify how much they need from their EU partners.

An island with just 1 million residents, Cyprus has a disproportionately large financial sector that is heavily exposed to Greece, a neighbor more than 10 times the size with which it shares a language, culture and close political links.

A government statement said: "The purpose of the required assistance is to contain the risks to the Cypriot economy, notably those arising from the negative spillover effects through its financial sector, due to its large exposure in the Greek economy."

RUSSIA AND CHINA?

With a bailout widely viewed as all but inevitable, Cyprus has for weeks been trying to juggle its options between a bailout from Europe's rescue funds - the temporary EFSF and the permanent ESM - or a bilateral loan from either Russia or China.

Cypriot President Demetris Christofias was scheduled to brief political leaders on Tuesday afternoon, a statement from the presidency said. The EU's only Communist leader, Christofias has been reluctant to accept the fiscal and regulatory conditions that might be attached to a European rescue.

As late as this weekend, trips by government officials to China suggested Cyprus was still holding out hope for a bilateral loan from a third country. On Friday night Christofias spoke of "trying to avoid" the mechanism.

Commerce, Industry and Tourism Minister Neoklis Sylikiotis was dispatched to China, where talks were focused on a loan or a Chinese investment in the troubled Cyprus Popular Bank.

"We have had some contacts... We have requested an answer in coming days," Sylikiotis said in comments to the state broadcaster hours before the government said it would be applying to the EU.

Moscow already provided Cyprus with 2.5 billion euros in a bilateral loan last year and has an interest in maintaining Cyprus as an offshore financial centre with low tax rates for Russian businessmen, who use it as a base to reinvest in Russia.

However, seeking such large sums from Moscow or Beijing is controversial in Cyprus, where EU membership is a matter of national pride. It could be embarrassing for Brussels as well, as Cyprus assumes the bloc's rotating presidency on July 1.

PROTECTIVE OF TAX

Cyprus is fiercely protective of a corporate tax rate that is one of the lowest in the EU, and eight months before a general election shows no appetite for the stringent spending cuts likely to be demanded in return for EU funding.

Christofias has repeatedly said any economic measures would not further impact "the workers".

The European Commission has repeatedly urged Cyprus to take measures to cut its deficit below 3.0 percent and increase the competitiveness of the economy. The government says it is in the process of implementing such steps and targets a deficit of about 2.5 percent of GDP this year.

"The main source of concern is the bank recapitalization, but given that the European Commission is coming out quite strongly about excessive imbalances in the Cypriot economy one would expect them to look at that too," said Michalis Florentiades, head of economic research at Hellenic Bank.

Cyprus Popular needs a capital infusion urgently to satisfy regulators after writing off the value of Greek government bonds in a sovereign debt swap earlier this year.

In its report, Fitch said the recapitalization bill for Cypriot banks could potentially reach 4 billion euros. That amount, equivalent to 23 percent of GDP, would also take into account rising non-performing loans from the domestic market.

Chinese food like you've never seen it before

A new Chinese food documentary series called 'A Bite of China' has broken all audience records in China.?More than 100 million people have seen all seven episodes.

Chinese TV viewers have never seen anything like it, and they are lapping it up. High on production value and low on politically correct pomposity, a new documentary series ?A Bite of China? has broken all audience records.

It doesn?t hurt, of course, that the series is about food, a subject dear to most Chinese hearts. It helps, too, that the seven episodes are lovingly filmed in high definition, offering lyrical, often sensuous shots of particularly delicious or beautiful food.

But most importantly, perhaps, in a country where consumers live in fear of poisoned baby formula, cooking oil recovered from restaurant drains, and pesticide-laced fruit, the series highlights good, traditional simple food and the people who harvest and prepare it.

?At a time of food safety crisis in China, these programs are popular because they show respect for tradition, hard work, and nature,? says Cheng Chunli, deputy head of international marketing for China Central Television, the state-run broadcaster that made the shows.

CCTV?s documentaries, which tend to be dull, worthy programs taking a heavily didactic approach to historical or cultural themes, normally draw about 20 million viewers. More than 100 million people have seen all seven episodes of ?A Bite of China,? says Ms. Cheng. For the first time, she adds, a documentary has proved more popular than the drama series that normally top the Chinese ratings.

Chen Xiaoqing, who directed the series, says he never expected it to be so popular even though ?everybody likes to eat.? He attributes its unexpected success to the fact that CCTV premiered the series last month on its flagship channel and to the novel style in which he made the programs.

??We took a Western approach,? Mr. Chen says, explaining how that differs from the standard Chinese method of making a TV documentary. ?It?s very simple,? he says. ?It?s telling a story, whereas other [Chinese] documentaries try to educate you.?

Chen seduces the viewer into being educated by the beauty of his HD film. Whether through a voluptuous shot of silky soymilk being poured into an earthenware vat or the appetizing sizzle of a wokful of stir fried beef, Chen draws in the viewer.

The director clearly loves food; indeed he says that he is ?still looking for a dish I cannot eat.? And he is entranced by the magic inherent in food, explaining and showing how racks of tofu can grow delicate white hairs until they resemble mattresses, or how sparkling crusts of salt crystallize from salty well water as it evaporates in the sun.

One episode, devoted entirely to the soybean and its multitudinous derivatives, recounts the legend of tofu?s invention in the pursuit of magic: An ancient Chinese emperor-wizard in search of the secret of eternal life added gypsum to soymilk and found it gelled into bean curd.

As the mellifluously voiced narrator declaims portentously, ?the invention of tofu forever changed the soybean?s destiny.?

Miss Any of the Romney Retreat? All the Details from the Donor Confab

ABC News' Shushannah Walshe and Arlette Saenz report:

If you're like most of America, maybe you spent this summer weekend barbecuing. Not super-rich Republican donors, conservative thinkers and GOP elective officials. They were in beautiful Park City, Utah, where presumptive GOP presidential nominee Mitt Romney hosted a fundraiser / policy brainstorming session / salon for everybody who is anybody in the Republican party.

The event was closed to the public and reporters, but here, pieced together from ABC reporters on the ground, is some of what you'd have seen if you had made the list to hobnob with the Republican elite.

FRIDAY AFTERNOON: As attendees entered the Chateaux at Silver Lake, the host hotel, throughout the sunny afternoon, they were handed a Vineyard Vines tan canvas tote bag with navy piping and the words "Believe in America" stitched on the side. Inside the bag was a blue baseball hat with "Romney" written over a circular American flag and a thick white binder, detailing the weekend's schedule from policy discussions to social events, along with a list of Romney's upcoming events and Romney for president pins.

In addition to the Romney swag, there was also a typed note from Romney's National Finance Chairman Spencer Zwick addressed to the attendees by their first names. "Welcome to the first Romney Victory Leadership Retreat! We are very glad you were able to join us for this special weekend. Thank you for the continued support and leadership. On to victory!," the card read.

Some were even personalized with a handwritten note from Zwick expressing appreciation to the donor and his or her family, signed with his initials "SZ."

Golf carts whipped attendees around the complex and to discussions on healthcare, Israel, the state of the race, and the financial services industry that were conducted both Friday and Saturday.

One of the first discussions was a lecture from former Secretary of State James Baker III. Rodger Young and his 26-year-old daughter, Lauren, came from New York and Chicago respectively for the retreat (each attendee was allowed a guest, or plus one) and they described the speech as "positive" in tone. Although the father recounted that Baker did say the country was in "significant trouble" because of the nation's "debt burden," he said Baker also assured that the state of the world "internationally?isn't as bad as you think," specifically pointing out that America has "still by far the strongest military."

Baker scolded the Obama administration for "ignoring any type of bi-partisanship," according to the Youngs.

FRIDAY NIGHT: Retreat goers attended a reception at Olympic Park, which sits atop a mountain overlooking picturesque Park City. Romney waved to the small group of press relegated to the bottom of the mountain as his motorcade zoomed up the mountainside.

As young Olympic hopefuls practiced on the ski jumping hills from the 2002 Olympics, which Romney ran, donors arrived amid heavy security.

Reporters were not allowed into the event, but Olympic athletes did perform their ski jumping for those lucky enough to attend with their plus ones.

Two donors who attended the reception said their highlight was Ann Romney's speech when she introduced her family and roasted her sons, four of whom attended.

South Dakota Sen. John Thune told ABC News Ann Romney's speech was "funny" and called Mitt Romney's address "inspirational" in tone that went beyond just thanking the fundraisers, adding that the presumptive GOP nominee described how he wants to lead the country.

Larry Conti, a plus-one attendee from Los Angeles, said Romney mentioned the Brookings Institution study, often cited by Rick Santorum during the primaries. Romney spoke about this study in his speech to the annual Faith and Freedom Conference in Washington, D.C., earlier this month. The study found that marriage, education, and employment all play important roles in keeping people out of poverty.

SATURDAY MORNING: To kick off Day Two, Sen. John McCain addressed the donors. Young said McCain spoke about Iran, saying that "Iran is so much closer to nuclear weaponry than they were at the commencement of the Barack Obama term." McCain, who ran against President Obama in 2008, also discussed the "perceived weakness of the United States" in the world.

The panels might have been well attended, but Saturday morning the place to be was the lobby where a man in a dark suit and purple pocket square was camped out talking to what appeared to be lanyard-wearing donors. The man was Charlie Spies, the founder of the Mitt Romney-backing super PAC Restore Our Future.

He wasn't attending any of the panels or discussions and didn't even want to go in to get a cup of coffee, but with attendees walking to and from meetings or gathering to talk, the lobby was a popular gathering point.

It's legal for Spies to be there, but "coordination" with the candidate is not, a rule that's hard to enforce and explain.

He pleasantly wouldn't answer questions about the propriety of him hobnobbing at the Romney Victory Leadership Retreat, but he said, "Romney supporters are energized."

"People here understand that the private sector is not doing fine and we need a president who understands how to create jobs and turn the economy around," Spies told ABC News.

The Romney campaign said the super PAC members were in Park City on their own, and were not attendees of the event.

"ROF staff were not invited, nor did they attend or participate in the retreat," Romney campaign spokeswoman Andrea Saul said. "As with members of the media, they may have been in public spaces, and the campaign did not control that. We are fully aware of the law and comply with it completely."

Of course, he wasn't the only person affiliated with a GOP superPAC on hand for the weekend events.

SATURDAY AFTERNOON: Karl Rove, founder of American Crossroads and a former Bush strategist, was also there. He spoke on a "media insight" panel and on another one examining Romney's path to victory. Rove, dressed in a blue blazer, told reporters his panel was "damn good," before whizzing away on a golf cart.

Attendees said the panel was engaging and humorous, with Rove swearing up a storm and regaling the crowd with funny stories.

Utah Rep. Jason Chaffetz told reporters both Rove and GOP strategist Mary Matalin were making the crowd howl, telling them about when Vice President Dick Cheney accidentally shot a friend with bird-shot pellets on a hunting trip.

"He was on full display," Chaffetz said of Rove.

It wasn't all joking, though. According to Young, Rove said, "We had to focus on some particular groups, such as some Republicans that didn't vote in the last election," including focusing on women. It's unclear whether Rove was also soliciting donations as he mingled with attendees over the weekend.

Spotted walking into the Rove panel: Matt Romney

SATURDAY'S LUNCH RECEPTION: Former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice was very well received, with almost every donor saying her speech was the highlight of the weekend. She spoke with no notes and received a sustained standing ovation when she was done, according to several attendees.

Charles Cobb, who served as ambassador to Iceland from 1989 to 1992, said Rice was "spectacular" and described her as a "very bright, sophisticated, articulate lady."

Husband-and-wife donors from Los Angeles who did not want to be identified said Rice's message was one of "America needing to take charge."

"We can't stand by and let things happen," the wife said. "If we do, someone else will take that leadership role."

They both described her address as an "impassioned plea" for the country to "stand up and take charge."

Donor Kent Lucken, an international banker in Boston who moved back to his home state of Iowa for six weeks before the caucuses to help Romney, said "she rocked it."

ALSO SATURDAY: It wasn't just listening to the top leaders and thinkers of the Republican Party. Donors also received a briefing by the Romney senior staff, including campaign manager Matt Rhoades, senior strategist Stuart Stevens, and longtime adviser Beth Myers, who is heading up the vice presidential selection process. They described the campaign's "10 a.m. meeting," according to Chaffetz, who attended.

"I think people were fascinated by that," Chaffetz said. "They spent a good half hour showing them how they would do that, and what they would talk about and how they review the numbers and talk about messaging and develop that into a cohesive message that's not only earned media but also paid media and other types of things. That was really different than I think that most people thought."

Chaffetz added that they went through "the analysis of what's going on in the media, looking at polling, looking at all the different facets."

SATURDAY EVENING: Former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush spoke at the final reception, and as donors were leaving to go to private dinners at restaurants and residences around town, one fundraiser from Greenwich, Conn., said Bush told the crowd "the country was only growing at 2 percent when we could be growing at 4 percent. If the country was growing at 4 percent we could add on another country the size of Germany to the United States."

Spotted going into the Bush reception: Ben, Matt, and Craig Romney.

After the address, attendees were whisked away in vans to private dinners where the GOP bold faced names addressed the crowd. Most were held in homes around Park City, but the one headlined by Sen. Rob Portman was just across the street.

Portman exclusively chatted with ABC News as he made the stroll along the sidewalk to the restaurant at the Golden Hirschner Inn. He called former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush's evening speech "scintillating. It was great as always" and said he delivered a "very positive message about the importance of this election and about Governor Romney. He was terrific."

Portman is considered one of the top contenders for Romney to pick as a running mate, and he joined a number of other possible VPs at the donor confab including former Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty, Wisconsin Rep. Paul Ryan, and Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal.

Asked if there was any VP talk while he was at the retreat today, Portman responded, "Nah."

But as he walked away about to enter the dinner, ABC News asked whether he enjoys the vice presidential talk or if he finds the constant questions annoying.

Without uttering any words, Portman waited a few seconds before turning around as he walked, shrugged his shoulders, lifted his arms and emitted a few chuckles.
