Mets find farm upstate for famous prank chicken

NEW YORK (AP) ? Tim Byrdak and the New York Mets just gave new meaning to baseball's farm system.

Thanks to the Mets' wacky reliever and a successful Twitter search, the most famous chicken in New York is headed to its new home. And surely, "Little Jerry Seinfeld" will be much more comfortable on a farm upstate than it was in the clubhouse at Citi Field.

All the fun started last week, when Mets closer Frank Francisco called the Yankees "chickens." Of course, that made for cartoonish tabloid headlines in the Big Apple leading up to the Subway Series.

As a prank, Byrdak, the Mets' resident joker, brought a live chicken into the clubhouse Friday, clucking up his teammates. The pitcher even posted a close-up video on Twitter of a chicken bobbing around on the carpet.

Byrdak said the chicken, which he named after the funny-looking bird that stole the show on an episode of "Seinfeld," spent a couple of days eating oatmeal and resting comfortably at the ballpark.

But then he realized he had to find it a new home. So a Twitter search put him in touch with the Farm Sanctuary of Watkins Glen, N.Y., which sent a representative to Citi Field on Sunday to take the celebrity chicken in a salient exchange that sent the New York press corps scrambling to document an undoubtedly transcendent moment about two hours before the game.

"The power of social media saved a bird's life today," Byrdak deadpanned.

Francisco explained Friday what he meant by his odd comment, saying he thinks the Yankees often protest calls by the umpires ? especially balls and strikes. He said he was excited to have a chance to strike out the side against them.

For their part, the Yankees seemed pretty confused by the whole chicken dance all weekend. Confused, and disinterested.

Not so the Mets.

"I did my best to stay out of the clubhouse yesterday when they were trying to pull the gag on Frankie. It was pretty funny," manager Terry Collins said Saturday, shaking his head and chuckling. "It keeps the clubhouse loose in certainly an intense situation."

Byrdak, of course, attributed his team's five-run first inning Friday night to its new good-luck charm. Francisco might not feel the same way ? after saving the series opener, he was placed on the 15-day disabled list Sunday with a strained muscle on his left side.

Earlier in the day, Byrdak acknowledged there was a lesson to be learned from his chicken conundrum: "Always think ahead if you're going to get an animal."

Boat Capsizes In Irvine Lake, Two Men Dead (VIDEO)

Two men are dead after a boating accident in Irvine Lake, Calif. (CBS)

ORANGE, Calif. -- The bodies of two fishermen have been recovered after their boat capsized in a Southern California lake overnight.

Orange County Sheriff's Lt. Jim England says divers found the men Sunday morning after several hours of searching in Irvine Lake in Orange.

A security guard was on a patrol shortly after midnight when he spotted a small fiberglass boat upside down in the water. The guard saw two heads in the water and went to rescue the two men.

Those men said two of their friends were still in the water, so divers were called in to look for the missing men.

The names of the dead have not been released.

Florida?s springs, rivers and other waterways are threatened by pollution and low water flow. On Saturday former Governor Bob Graham will be at Silver River State Park near Ocala to warn the public about this statewide problem.

The Speak Up for Silver Springs and Florida?s Waters event will feature speeches from Florida Conservation Coalition leaders, nature exhibits, outdoor activities and live music. Robert Knight, director of the Florida Springs Institute, says public awareness is crucial to protect Florida waters.

?We have seriously declining water flows in all of our springs and our rivers. Silver Springs is a good example of that problem. We also have rising nitrogen levels, nitrate in our ground water which is causing water quality problems in our springs, once again Silver Springs is a good example of that. So it?s an opportunity to raise awareness to these issues and to try to demand attention to these problems from our state agencies.?

Knight says there are many ways the pubic can get involved to restore imperiled waters in Florida.

?The simplest things are to cutback on landscape irrigation or to eliminate it and to cut back on the use of fertilizers or to eliminate fertilizer use completely. Those are things the public can do. We need industry and agriculture to do the same things and they need to set a better example for the public so that they public feels that they can make a meaningful change in concert by what?s being done by these other industries that are using a large part of our water and resulting in a lot of our water contamination issues.?

The Speak Up for Silver Springs and Florida?s Waters event will be held on Saturday at Silver River State park in Ocala beginning at 10 a.m.

Tropical Storm Debby forms in Gulf of Mexico

(AP) MIAMI - Tropical Storm Debby formed in the Gulf of Mexico on Saturday, interfering with oil and gas production and putting officials on alert for flooding and strong winds from southern Louisiana to the Florida Panhandle.

At least one tornado linked to the storm touched down in southwest Florida, but no injuries were reported.

Debby was about 220 miles (354 kilometers) south of the mouth of the Mississippi River, with maximum sustained winds of 50 mph (80 kph).

The center of Debby is expected to linger over the northern Gulf during the next few days with no landfall in the immediate forecast. Forecasters warned of up to six inches of rain along the coast, with isolated amounts of 10 inches.

It was the first time four tropical storms have been recorded before July 1 during the Atlantic hurricane season since record keeping began in 1851.

Debby forced the suspension of 8 percent of the region's oil and gas production.

The government reported that nine production platforms and one drilling rig were evacuated. The suspended crude production amounts to about 2 percent of U.S production and about 0.1 percent of global production. The reduced production is not expected to impact oil prices unless the storm strengthens and forces more production platforms to close.

A tropical storm warning was issued for part of the Louisiana coast. Officials there have been monitoring the weather closely for the last several days. Some low-lying areas close to the coast flood easily in rough weather.

"We've already seen higher tides than usual," said Angela Rains, manager of the Terrebonne Levee District.

Near the mouth of the Mississippi southeast of New Orleans, Plaquemines Parish President Billy Nungesser said officials were making preparations to protect the main highway from tidal flooding.

A tornado touched down in Collier County in southwest Florida and forecasters warned other twisters were possible.

Several homes were damaged and tree limbs were down, The Naples Daily News reported.

"This is quite common with this type of storm," said senior hurricane specialist Stacy Stewart with the National Hurricane Center. "They tend to not be very large or long-lived, which can be difficult to detect on radar. So people need to keep an eye on the sky."

Out in the Gulf, Anadarko Petroleum removed all non-essential personnel and expects to close four facilities in the central and eastern Gulf by Saturday. Chevron, Royal Dutch Shell and Marathon Oil said non-essential personnel were being removed but production was not being affected. ExxonMobil reported that its operations were unaffected.

Alberto was the first storm this year. It formed off the South Carolina coast on May 19, almost two weeks before the hurricane season officially began June 1.
